Active duty service members can request that Equifax, Experian and Trans Union place an active duty alert on their credit files. You only need to request this alert from one of the Big Three, who must then refer the alert to the other two CRAs. But you can always contact all three if you want to make sure your active duty alert is on your Equifax, Experian and Trans Union credit files.
The active duty alert will stay on your credit file for one year and will remove your name from any lists prepared by the CRAs for promotional inquiries for a period of two years from the date of the request.
The purpose of the active duty alert is to prevent identity theft but you still may become a victim despite having this alert on your credit file.
If you are a service member and a victim of identity theft, please contact us for a free consultation.
